Hard Hats and Robins

What do hard hats and robins have in common, you might ask. Nothing except that I have had encounters with both this week. Today I and a few of my fellow workers at the Morris center got to take a tour of the up and coming Central Production Kitchen. We Were supposed to take control of it on April 1, 2009. Well the projected date of the date of possession is September 1st. Anyway it is still mostly a cement building with many coolers, freezers, and production areas. It looks like we will have plenty of work to do. It is going to be more like a factory, assembly line type thing. We may even run two shifts. One really early. Or late depending on how you look at it, Some people are probably going to start at 10 p.m. Especially bakery and ice cream makers. Supposedly we should be sending out fresh cut veggies, fruit and other things by 4:00 a.m. Oh goody! Those of us who will be working in "veg prep", and "garmashay" will be working in a refrigerated environment. That is in rooms kept at 43 degrees. I don.t know about that, but I think it would be preferable to the stifling heat we work in now. There are very few days when I am too cold. Most of the time I am boiling hot! Many in the department, especially the thin tiny women are cold, and want all the air circulators turned off. Meanwhile. all I want is to be able to get fresh air and to stop sweating "like a butcher" as Grandma H would say. I really think I wouldn't be so exhausted after work if I could get a little air and coolness. If it gets to cold in the work stations, we can always add clothes, we can't take them off! Now to the Robins. For the last two days. when I get out to the garage in the morning I have heard this tapping at the garage window. When I first heard it I "thought, What the hey"? upon further investigation, I discover a big fat robin fighting the robin in the window, Every time he attacked his foe, it attacked him right back. He just wouldn't back down. I waved my arms, and he flew away, but was back at war with himself before I got back in the car to go to work. Yesterday he was gone by the time got home around 6:30 p.m. yesterday he was gone. This morning he was back, and of course so was his opponent. When I got back today at around 4:30 p.m. he was still at it. I got out of my car and went and looked in the window, and sure enough there I was looking at myself. He had managed to knock off the screen and poop a lot on the window sill. His opponent just won't get out of his territory.

Good luck with the robin. It took me about 6 months to get my protable hooked up to the intercom and fire alarms. Now there might be a possibility of moving back into the building. I too deal with the hot cold thing. SpEd. is on the other side of the portable and one of them is always cold so she'll crank up the heat to its allowed max. I on the other had have 30 bodies producing a lot of heat. Yesterday she had the heat on and I had the ac on. The side where she sits is controlled by me. If it is too hot the kids start to get sick. The battle goes on every day.

I fight that same guy the robin fights from time to time.

I remember Mammie Hall nailing aluminum pie pans around her eves to discourage the mud daubers from making a giant nest out of her house! We must be destined to fight with birds. Maybe he'll peck so hard that window will break and the upstart will finally be gone!
Do you know which shift you'll get yet? The cool shift sounds ideal except it starts at 4 AM. I'm not sure I could get up that early.

Give me cool room any day! I cannot stand the heat at all. I do not function very well when I am in stiffling condition! 4 a.m. is early but then you can go home earlier and sit in an air conditioned house! Or, better yet, stay up all night go to work and then come home and sleep when it is hot outside! Today it was 80 degrees and that was plenty warm for me. I too had to deal with stupid birds when our cherry tree was ready for picking.

I do not know which shist I will have, Either shift will be in the cool rooms. I do not even know what department I will be in. I hope it is a cool room. I was up most of the night last night with some kind of intestinal icky poo. I think a lot of the problem was because it was so hot in the *%!@#!$^% kitchen, and the chef keeps shutting of the hood because the noise is so obnoxious as to sound. The sound of the overhead fans don't bother me as much as having them off and not getting any air circulation does! That is probably why I was sick all night last night, and why I am so exhausted by the time I get home. I am getting my CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONER turned on next week. Yippy. I think that the garage for my car and the air conditioning are almost worte the cost of the house, right there!
